About The Whisker Report
The Whisker Report started the way most good things do: with a mess on the kitchen floor and a lot of unanswered questions. In 2019, our founder, Maren Ellery, adopted two littermates — a stubborn tabby named Gus and his sister Biscuit — and quickly discovered that choosing the right litter, scratching post, or bowl wasn't nearly as simple as the packaging promised. She spent months buying, testing, and returning products, taking notes in a battered spiral notebook that eventually became the first draft of this website. What began as personal record-keeping for two cats turned into a resource for thousands of pet owners asking the same questions she once had.
Today, The Whisker Report is a small, independent team of writers, former veterinary technicians, and lifelong pet owners who believe that good research shouldn't be locked behind jargon or buried in sponsored fluff. We cover cats, dogs, and the small menagerie of supplies in between — from orthopedic beds to slow-feed bowls to travel carriers that actually survive travel.
Our Founding Story
Maren's background is in consumer product testing, not veterinary medicine, and she'll be the first to say that's intentional. The Whisker Report was built to answer the practical, everyday questions pet owners actually have: Does this harness chafe? Does this litter track everywhere? Will this toy survive a determined chewer for longer than a week? After leaving a corporate research role in 2020, she brought on two collaborators — Priya Nathan, a former vet tech with a decade of clinical experience, and Colm Ferris, a product photographer and dog dad to a rescue named Otis — to build out a team that could test more products, more rigorously, across more households.
How We Review and Choose Products
Every product featured on The Whisker Report goes through the same core process before it earns a place in our recommendations.
- Hands-on testing first. We purchase the vast majority of products we review with our own budget. When manufacturers send samples, we disclose it clearly, and it never influences our conclusions.
- Real households, real pets. Our test group includes cats and dogs of different ages, sizes, and temperaments — from a senior arthritic beagle to a hyperactive kitten — because a product that works for one pet often fails for another.
- Structured criteria. We evaluate durability, safety, ease of cleaning, value for money, and manufacturer transparency, scoring each category consistently so comparisons across brands are fair.
- Long-term follow-up. Many items are retested after 30 and 90 days of regular use to catch issues that don't show up in the first week, like fraying seams or fading appeal.
- Independent editorial standards. Affiliate relationships help fund the site, but they never determine rankings. If a product underperforms, we say so, even if it means fewer commissions.
What Makes The Whisker Report Trustworthy
We're not a content farm churning out generic listicles. Every review is written by someone who has physically tested the product or consulted with someone who has, and every recommendation is periodically re-checked against new competitors and updated formulations. We correct our own mistakes publicly, we cite recalls and safety notices when relevant, and we link back to primary sources like manufacturer specs and veterinary guidance whenever it strengthens a claim.
Above all, The Whisker Report exists because pets deserve owners who've done their homework — and owners deserve a source that's done that homework for them, honestly and without the noise.
